Course Description

Our goal is to nurture students to become highly skilled elementary school teachers with strong creative and practical abilities. Classes are organized in a project-format as practical training; lectures and workshops are all interlinked together. Our curriculum covers wide areas concerned in
elementary school education ranging from the basics of painting, sculpture, design, craft and art theory to modeling, life-design and art appreciation, which are to be foundation of Art and Craft classes in elementary schools.

Curriculum

The very first thing our students do upon entering the program is to have a serious discussion with the teaching staff, in which they learn the characteristics and fundamental concepts of art education. Courses in the first year include general knowledge, contemporary issues and introduction to teaching, together with compulsory courses that concern basics of painting, sculpture, design, craft and art history/theory. In the second year, courses focus more on specialist techniques and skills to a larger extent, which are then combined with theoretical studies, in order to allow students to have well-rounded knowledge and skills. It is one of our characteristics that we offer practical courses by which students can utilize their ability in practical art making and art appreciation in the classroom environment. It is also emphasized that doors are open for the students who wish to pursue specialized practical education activities, which is supported by research on education theories that support it. For their graduation theses projects, students begin discussing their projects with their supervisors from a very early stage, submitting their graduation theses plans in their third year. They work on their research projects throughout their fourth year under the supervision of one or of our teaching staff. The central institution for the Art Course is the 'Art Building', and in addition to that, research laboratories and rooms for practical training are located in Building 6, Building 8 and the Building for Ceramics. The Art Building has a small courtyard where students can relax and chat with their friends.

NB: although we have not had graduates yet since departments have been restructured, alumni from our previous art education course have found variety of places to work in.
Teaching: elementary schools (Sendai, Miyagi, Hokkaido, Yokohama, Tokyo, etc.), junior high schools (Sendai, Miyagi, Hokkaido, Iwate, Kanagawa, Kawasaki, Tokyo, etc.) and part-time
Public Servants: Miyagi, Sendai, Natori, Japan Post, Police, Self Defense Force, etc.
Cultural Institutions: Sendai Mediatheque, Rias Ark Museum of Art, Ishinomaki Mangattan Museum, etc.
Companies: publishing, advertisement, printing, retail, among many others.
